| Governor's Commission To Study Poverty In Maryland | This Commission was charged with the tasks of examining the nature, extent, impact, and concentration of poverty in Maryland and with making recommendations for state action.
Conclusion: The Commission to Study Poverty in Maryland concludes that current standards for defining poverty are inadequate and unrealistic. The Commission has adopted a much higher standard for measuring the financial well being of households. While the poor face many barriers in this state, the most formidable barriers are the lack of political will and a concerted coordinated effort to end poverty in this wealthy state. The Commission believes the focus of efforts should be on the level of self-sufficiency each household can achieve, and on the role that the State can play in ensuring that families and individuals reach that goal. Maryland can and should do better by its poor residents. Poverty is not simply a matter of having little wealth and few possessions; it also speaks to an ability to be valuable in society. All of our citizens have worth and the capacity to contribute; we must not squander that resource.
